Welcome to the Diocese of Niagara

Hi

I’m Bishop Ralph Spence, and I have the privilege of serving a group of people that I consider to be dynamic and vital - the Diocese of Niagara.

You’re on this page because you are somewhat curious about the Anglican Church.  Maybe you’ve even heard that we are a stuffy bunch of 'old' folks. Well, nothing can be further from the truth. All churches were stuffy at one time - but today we’re working at being relevant and making a positive contribution to the world around us.

The Anglican Church is open and vibrant. Because of this openness, we’ve overcome hundreds of years of traditions that were no longer helpful. In 1976, the first women were ordained to the priesthood in the history of this country. We’ve haven’t turned back since.

We’re a church that is willing to discuss and confront any issue that we face. We acknowledge our differing opinions and press onwards in love and in growth. We’re not afraid of challenge and we’re not afraid of criticism. What we want is to live a life of justice and to create a wonderful society around us. We pattern our openness and enthusiasm to grow on the teachings and lived example of our founder Jesus Christ.

It may seem trite for me to say our churches are places of hospitality. The fact is - that they are.  If you visit one of them, you will be welcomed with open arms. If you choose, you will also be welcomed to share in their meal of bread and wine, or as we call it - the Eucharist or Communion.

We have a deep conviction that our world needs us and needs our values. We need you to join us and to walk the path that Jesus has set out for us. It’s challenging and rewarding at the same time.

Try us out - I’m quite sure that you’ll find a place in our community that will feel just right for you. If you’d like to know more about us please click on some of the links on this page. You’ll find lots of interesting information.

Thanks for coming here - come again and be sure to stop by one of our communities some Sunday soon - you’ll be glad you did.

+ Ralph
