Budget 2008

Judy Conning, Chair of Budget sub-committee, presented the budget.

• 1999 diocese faced a financial crisis
• unrestricted funds were used to supplement operating
• the bank was concerned
• in the following years we took steps to remedy the situation
• Survive and Thrive happened - 7.3 million was raised
• Evangelism minister was hired in 2003
• This was absorbed into the diocesan budget.
• Evangelism, Stewardship and Leadership have helped us to focus our budget
• Since 1999 have generated some budget surpluses and have replaced over 2 million of our funds.
• 2008 is a transition year for our budget
• we apologize an internet glitch prevented reporting a much of this report. - we will include Judy Conning's slide presentation (narrative at a later time)
• 45% of operating budget supports parish ministry
• $3,242,369 - proposed diocesan budget

Questions:

Is there concern about interest rates - for our budget?

Treasurer : We expect the market to recover - but we do not have a crystal ball.

We are holding the same amount to general synod - but they are asking for 26%. We are hovering at 21%. We have not adjusted that figure. Peter Wall encourages synod to look at our role as one of the wealthiest diocese- even if we increase by half of one percent per year.

Kate Snider - we had regional budget meetings years past. Why not this year?

Treasurer: The budget is status quo - so we decided that it was not good enough reason to have meetings.

Robin Graves: Evangelism and Leadership are to priorities - but there seems to be an inconsistency by eliminating evangelism and human resources.

Treasurer: we expected some changes in direction with the new administration. We are looking for new direction. The dollars are still there for the evangelism officer. We await direction.

Adam - (youth) - confusion about increased costs to youth ministry and canterbury hills - are we reducing support?

Treasurer: The cost of Canterbury is going up. If parishes use canterbury hills we subsidized - but - we expect this will not be used .
